AI Tools at MSU

An overview of AI tools available to MSU faculty, staff, and students.

Tools You Already Have (Free)

The following tools are available to all MSU faculty, staff, and students at no cost. No request needed — just sign in with your MSU credentials.

Microsoft Copilot Chat

  • Free for all MSU users
  • A conversational AI interface built on top of powerful models including OpenAI's GPT family and Anthropic's Claude (rolling out)
  • Available inside the Microsoft 365 environment (Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, etc.)
  • No additional setup required — access through your existing Microsoft 365 account

Google Gemini

  • Free for all MSU users via MSU NetID / SSO
  • Supports writing, research assistance, and multimodal content creation
  • To access: add a msstate.edu profile to your Gmail account. This authenticates via MSU single sign-on (SSO). If you don't have a Gmail account, follow Google's instructions to add one.

NotebookLM

  • Free for all MSU users via MSU NetID / SSO
  • Source-grounded document analysis — ideal for working with research papers, reports, and long documents with no hallucinations
  • Access the same way as Gemini (msstate.edu profile / SSO)

About Microsoft Copilot

Copilot is Microsoft's AI interface — not its own AI model, but a front door connecting you to powerful underlying models within your Microsoft 365 environment.

Copilot Chat (Free)

Available to all MSU users at no charge. Provides a secure conversational AI experience inside Microsoft 365. Ask questions, draft content, explore ideas, and interact with files in a secure workspace. No action needed — you already have access.

Microsoft 365 Copilot ($18/month)

An enhanced paid license that connects directly to Outlook, Teams, OneDrive, SharePoint, and other Microsoft 365 apps. Helps with summarizing email threads, preparing meeting briefs, generating documents, and automating routine work.
